What I'm Watching: Yellowjackets, Shadow and Bone, Scream 6, and More
On five shows, two movies, two podcasts, and a fifty year-old TV special we could still learn something from today.
Ben Barnes, Shadow and Bone, Netflix
Here’s everything I’ve been watching this week, and what I thought about it:
The shows:
- Yellowjackets returns this week, and I’m delighted to say that I love the second season of Showtime’s teen girl survival show approximately twice as much as the first – which is really saying something since I named season one among the best shows of 2021. I’ll hold off on saying more for now since I have a review to come over at Film School Rejects, but if you haven’t gotten on board with this show yet, check it out quickly because everyone’s about to be talking about it (again).
- If you need any more proof that the TV landscape is completely oversaturated at the moment, look no further than Lucky Hank; there’s a brand new AMC show starring Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk, and no one’s talking about it. I’ve only seen the first two episodes of this campus comedy, but as a former liberal arts school English major, it’s right up my alley so far. Here’s my review.
- My only non-new-release TV watch of the week was Free To Be…You And Me, a children’s TV special from 1974 that you’re probably either intimately familiar with or have never heard of, depending on your age. Other than the Alan Alda of it all (#Aldawatch 2023 continues), I was curious about this one because I’m always interested in learning about how diversity on TV has evolved over the years. It’s depressing to think that parts of this sweet little special – which is mostly about breaking down gendered stereotypes – might be more poorly received now than they were back then.
