What I'm Watching: Silo, Citadel, White House Plumbers, and More

Here’s the rundown on everything I watched and wrote about this week.

The shows:

• Apple TV+ has an adaptation of Hugh Howey’s Silo books coming out, and it’s pretty dang compelling. It’s a high-concept, futuristic series about a group of people living in an underground silo because they’ve been told the air outside is poisonous. The show follows some familiar dystopic story beats, but it also does some very cool things, like kicking off with a full-throttle pilot that feels more like a finale and evolving into a full-fledged post-apocalyptic noir. Here’s my review.
• Weirdly, I watched exactly two episodes of four different shows this week, and since that’s not really enough time investment to form a definitive opinion, I’m corralling them all under one bullet point for the time being. The trippy Apple TV+ crime series Shining Girls is both intriguing and confusing, while HBO’s White House Plumbers takes a near-farcical approach to the Watergate scandal (and the dangerous political buffoonery it entailed) that doesn’t work for me. The Jennifer Garner-led Apple TV+ adaptation The Last Thing He Told Me is surprisingly boring from the start, and Prime Video’s obscenely expensive spy show Citadel is so generic that I felt like the details of the episodes I watched slid out of my head right after I finished them. Again, take all of these hot takes with a grain of salt since I didn’t finish any of these shows – and feel free to share your own take in the comments if you think any of these deserve my continued attention!
