What I'm Watching: RRR, Glass Onion, The Old Man, and More
On five movies, two shows, two books, a podcast, and a stand-up special.
Daniel Craig, Glass Onion, Netflix
Here’s everything I’ve watched these past two weeks, and what I thought about it:
The TV shows:
- When I was home for the holidays, my friends showed me Brian Jordan Alvarez’s YouTube series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo and it was an extremely funny, consistently inexplicable delight. I never really seek out YouTube shows because I tend to tell myself I don’t have time to add a whole other medium to my plate, but I love vacations because I can end up watching stuff I never expected – like this show, which turned out to be from the man behind one of my favorite videos on the internet.
- I’m finally digging into some of the Critics Choice nominees I haven’t seen yet, starting with Joel Kim Booster’s Psychosexual. The Fire Island writer and star’s first Netflix stand-up comedy special is right up my alley: funny, frank, and a little bit scandalous in a very entertaining way.
- I also burned through FX’s The Old Man, which is on Hulu. I really don’t know what to make of this show starring Jeff Bridges as a former CIA agent on the run. It has a stellar cast (John Lithgow, Alia Shawkat, and Amy Brenneman are all aces) and the first few episodes are an entrancing mix of action, intrigue, and scripts that feel like they’re almost entirely made of monologues. But the show’s writing style wears out quickly, even with only seven episodes.
