What I'm Watching: Knock at The Cabin, Party Down, "Long, Long Time," and More

Adam Scott, Party Down, Starz

Here’s everything I watched this week, and what I thought about it.

The shows:

  • I rewatched season two of the cult favorite show Party Down in anticipation of its comeback this month, and I loved it a lot more this time around than I did a decade ago. The cast led by baby-faced Adam Scott is unparalleled (and the Veronica Mars cast overlap is unreal!), it has a kind of Curb Your Enthusiasm-adjacent comedy style, and it does a great job making LA people the butt of every joke.
  • Did anyone catch Pedro Pascal on Saturday Night Live last night? I haven’t actively watched that show in years but tuned in for him since everything he does lately delights me. The whole episode is really funny, but if you only have time to watch a few sketches, I recommend “Fancam Assembly” and “Lisa From Temecula,” the latter of which has some good old-fashioned character breaking from Pascal, Bowen Yang, and pretty much everyone else in the scene.
  • I’m now fully caught up on Netflix’s serial killer romance-comedy-thriller(?) You, including the upcoming fourth season. I can’t talk about that one yet, but my overall impression of the show is that 70% of the time it’s a surprisingly clever skewering of specific elite subcultures (and its unreliable, insufferable narrator), and 30% of the time it’s an unfocused, try-hard melodrama. Make of that what you will!
  • I’m trying to make my way through Star Trek: Picard but my enthusiasm is already stalling out in the first season (I’ve always been more of a TOS person than a TNG person). I’ll keep trucking through because I’ve heard the upcoming third season is great.
