What I'm Watching: 1923, Tár, Cha Cha Real Smooth, and More
On twenty episodes, five TV shows, some movies, a book, and one great composer.
Evan Assante, Cooper Raiff, Cha Cha Real Smooth, Apple Studios
Here’s what I watched this week, and what I thought about it.
The TV shows:
- I’ve been staying with family and friends for the holidays this week, which means I’ve been consuming a pretty steady diet of extremely random stuff other people put on. That includes roughly 70% of the 2018 animated version of The Grinch (the dog was cute, otherwise no opinion), a good chunk of both Home Alone films (Kevin is so much more annoying than I remembered), and the latest Survivor finale. I kind of loved the drama of the latter, and now I’m considering getting back into Survivor, which I used to watch all the time as a kid and which a few critics I know have been binge-watching lately. Feel free to comment below with any strong Survivor opinions.
- I screened Netflix’s Noah Centineo spy show The Recruit (full review to come, but the show’s out now) and thought it was a lot of light fun. It reminds me of the quintessential USA Channel shows from the 2000s – funny, frothy, escapist to the point of kind of feeling like a fantasy series, and a little dark all at once.
